Application for the BELGIAN NATIONALITY : INCREASE IN THE FEE

To be able to submit a request for Belgian nationality, it is necessary to pay the fee of a registration right called the “receipt”. The proof of payment must be attached to the other documents that make up the nationality application.

Once the payment is made, it is valid without an expiration date until used for the submission of a nationality application. However, a payment can only be used for a single request for Belgian nationality. If the application results in a negative decision from the Public Prosecutor and a foreigner wishes to submit a new request for nationality, they will need to pay for a new receipt.

This amount has long remained at a fixed rate of 150 euros per person per application. A new law has recently substantially increased this amount. Since the 29th of July 2025, the fee to be paid is 1000 euros. The constitutionality of this increase raises questions, particularly as it makes access to the Belgian citizenship more difficult for certain categories of foreigners.

Furthermore, the registration fee is now subject to the annual indexing on every 1st of January.

Thus, from this 1st of January 2026, the amount of the receipt is 1030 euros.  

The payment is made online via the platform of SPF Finances "MyMinfin" (www.myminfin.be). You need to log in to your Myminfin account and go to the tab “my payments”, where there is a section “pay a nationality application”. You can then make the payment online. Within 24 hours of the payment, you can download the proof of payment by going to the tab “my documents”. This document contains the digital signature of SPF Finances and is therefore the only document that can be attached to the nationality application to prove the payment of the registration fees (and not, for example, a bank statement or a screenshot).

In addition to the payment of the receipt, other conditions including economic, linguistic, integration, and residency requirements, may be required to be granted the Belgian nationality.
